Authority offers sympathy on the death of Mr. Nicky Fewer, Chairperson of South-East Regional Airport

In expressing his condolences, the Cathaoirleach further stated that "Mr. Fewer had great drive and energy. His highly successful chairmanship of the Waterford Organising Committee for the Tall Ship’s Races in 2005, which attracted 450,000 visitors to the city earned him the accolade of Freedom of the City and recognition by the Irish Tourism Board".

Cllr. Fitzgerald acknowledged Nicky Fewer’s work as chairperson of the South-East Regional Airport and for his other major contributions to the city and the region in a business capacity. Mr. Fewer ran a successful Architects Practice, Fewer, Harrington Lawor & Partners and took an active interest in all aspects of the development of Waterford and the South-East. He was an honorary life member of Waterford Chamber of Commerce.

Having previously served as a director since 1986, Mr. Fewer was elected as chairperson of South-East Regional Airport in 2002 and since then the airport has enjoyed a partnership with Aer Arann and has significantly expanded its services.

"Mr. Fewer helped transform the regional airport to a key piece of regional infrastructure and had vision for the airport going forward. Under his chairmanship passenger numbers at the airport grew from 26,000 in 2001 to 145,000 in 2008" stated Cllr. Fitzgerald.

"Mr. Fewer’s vision for South-East Regional Airport was ambitious and he expressed a desire to grow the airport to handle 500,000 passengers and to connect Waterford with European destinations. I hope that through the work and dedication of the Director, Management and Staff of the regional airport that this vision will become a reality. May he rest in peace".
